WAIT IN THE PARKING LOT WEEK
*COMMENT LINE: 206-333-1648*

*** DIRECT LINK TO SHOW ***

We've all been there ... sitting in the car, waiting for someone to finish shopping so we could go home ... I mean, after we tried the hold our breath in the store until we turn blue and throw a tantrum thing because we were missing something on TV ... as many of us learned the hard way, you can only do that once before you realize after the fact that your HMO won't cover the ambulance expenses as a legitimate emergency, even if it was season finale week.

SEGMENT ONE:
Wal-Mart vs. Apple: Cupertino taketh away thou DVDs, but also giveth backeth to the bottometh lineth.

SEGMENT TWO:
Podzinger minute: Lindsay Lohan, Kiera Knightly and Lynne Cheney in a lesbian three-way, among other stream-of-consciousness things.

PODSAFE MUSIC: Howard Jones, "Building Your Own Future."

SEGMENT THREE:
Part One of my interview on Cotolo Chronicles, the first and still best trendsetter in online alternative content.

SPECIAL 'WHAT WAS THAT!? DID YOU FEEL THAT!?' HAWAII QUAKE EDITION
*COMMENT LINE: 206-333-1648*

*** DIRECT LINK TO SHOW ***

Just a quick update from the Digital Slob in Waikiki post quakes, from his still standing shoebox in paradise. Sunday morning Hawaii was hit with two separate earthquakes, a 6.7 and a 6.0, within minutes of each other. Thankfully there was no tsunami ... if there was, I'd be typing this under water.

For more info on the quake check out starbulletin.com

EXPO EXPOS FACTO WEEK

*** DIRECT LINK TO SHOW ***

Many stories have already been told about the 2006 Podcast and Portable Media Expo ... it was in late September, after all ... many say that train has left the station ... but my hangover has just now left me, so it's time to review:

Highlights include:

1) My wife, Olga, the publicity machine
2) Meeting cool people
3) My panel discussion
4) Two orders of room service buttermilk pancakes that I didn't have to pay for.
5) The Parties

Lowlights include:

1) My wife taking heat from Jason Calacanis
2) Leo LaPorte's keynote
3) The unfortunately still too impenetrable podcast bubble.

Dvorak surprised Hawaii has computers

After a long day of conk blowing and virgin sacrificing up on the volcano, I came across this post from noted tech columnist John C. Dvorak after he heard I'd compared him in a column to Stattler, the famous Muppet curmudgeon who heckled acts from the balcony with his partner-in-crime Waldorf:

"This takes the cake for off-handed compliment/insults. Curt 'Digital Slob' Brandao writing in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin says I look like the Muppet Show character Stattler. I was shocked when I read this. I had no idea they used computers in Hawaii."

A nice little jab back from Dvorak, since whatever admiration I have for him -- considerable, he knows more tech stuff than I do and can bore normal people at 10 times my top speed -- was probably deeply cloaked in my apt comparison -- but come on, you don't have to go after the entire Aloha State ;-). We've got quite a tech industry here, actually.

Truth is, I am a Dvorak fan. Here's the link to what I had to say about his "Cranky Geeks" video podcast. It's generally positive, I think, though, admittedly, something gets lost when it's translated from its original hula.

Yes, John, Hawaii has computers -- it's amazing what you can make out of coconuts.

Mmmmm ... publicity

Seems a comment AOL exec Jason Calacanis made to my wife/supermodel/digitalslobpod cohost/digitalslobpod spokesperson Olga Timakova at the Podcast and Portable Media Expo has caused many in the blogosphere to rise up to defend her honor ... I would have led that fight, of course, but we've been sleeping off the expo in a Vegas hotel, and I didn't want to pay for Net access until now b/c I wanted to save my resources for blackjack ... as it turns out, there was no point, however.

Apparently, as I've just learned, when I was working the other side of the expo hall in Ontario, Calif., last weekend, he told my wife "You're podcasting? Let me give you some good advice, no one wants to hear you talk." Olga didn't tell me about it, but that was no surprise ... she usually spares me from looking at the vast, cavernous inventory of comments she gets from men because it's been known to give me vertigo.

Seems Valleywag has a poll up
, asking who you'd rather listen to talk ... Jason or Olga ... right now, Olga's ahead w/ 93 percent of the vote ... I think the campaign poster helps.

Webpronews.com reporter Jason Lee Miller also bravely refuted Calacanis' claims in a story he posted today about us ... maintaining that Olga has a wonderful speaking voice, especially when near a Marriot hotel pool party, although he did, technically, also call her a liar.

Chris Heuer
, the expo attendee and blogger who took the photo above, said in his estimation Jason wasn't being sexist, but simply commenting on the quality of Olga's voice ... as for Olga? Her direct quote ... "Listen to digitalslobpod, and judge for yourself."

Rarin' to go Expo

Havin' a blast at the Podcast and Portable Media Expo in Ontario, Calif., this weekend ... lost pretty quick at the Pickle Poker Tourney ... but that is to be expected ... going to wear the shirt shown here I had made up so people could instantaneously tell if I was someone important enough to talk to down on the expo floor ... I'm thinking they should hand these out next year, anywhere from "not very important" "very, very, important." Got another shirt that says "Slack Off on Your Day Job."

Apple gone a courtin

Looks like Apple has decided to claim a trademark on the term "podcast" in much the same offical way Daisy, my beagle mix, claims the neighborhood fire hydrant every day around dusk, sending cease and desist orders to certain smaller site owners that use the term.

This has lots of folks upset, and rightly so ...

So, far, I'm one of the lucky ones, though Cupertino could be working its way down a list and might go after those who use "pod" as a suffix, as well as a prefix or a root word, eventually. Still, guess I better delay the unveiling of my new show until I contact a lawyer ... I was planning to call it "Live With Regis, Kleenex, Mo-Ped, Xerox and Jet Ski."

Bloom-in media

Ron Bloom of Podshow predicts that in five years, 50 percent of all media consumed will be produced by consumers ... The Age of Mr. Microphone is finally upon us.

I predict the other 50 percent of media consumed will be produced by nanobots that are constantly regenerating Oprah’s cellular structure.

Regardless, his point (directed at advertisers) seems to be that corporations need to enlist the support of hundreds or thousands of tiny worker ants to viral-market their message in renegade, off-the-cuff, uncontrollable ways, podcasts presumably being among those ways. Hip, cool hipsters passing out virtual fliers in virtual airports wearing virtual togas.

Fascinating point from someone who has both the gift of foresight and the gift of venture capital. That said, I look forward to seeing how the ad messages will filter through the podcasting community. Will 50 percent of all the top 100 podcasts suddenly work Diet Pepsi, somehow, into their format one week? That could come across a bit creepy. Bodysnatcher-esque ... bringing perhaps too much old meaning to the term "Pod People."

I'm sure I missing the point. I usually think clearer after I've had some DIET PESPI!!!! OH NO!! AAAAAAUUUGHHHHHH!

While I'm still recovering from my nasty bug, this week, digitalslobpod advances the spread of the theme by sucking the life out of another podcast like a parasite, the Cotolo Chronicles, with Part Two of Curt's conversation with veteran broadcaster Frank Cotolo. Snuff-fetish topics include:

The death of newspapers, the death of live entertainment, the death of "professional content." The death of the phrase "the death of." And, plotting the demise of Digital Rights Management.

We may be entering the paperless society, but it's not stopping the Media Grim Reaper from being up to his eyeballs in paperwork.

ROLE-REVERSAL WEEK

*** DIRECT LINK TO SHOW ***

Sorry for the delay ... Curt has the flu, so his wife Olga sits in for him, editing highlights from his appearance last week on Cotolo Chronicles. So Olga hosts, instead of Curt, on a highlight show where Curt is the guest, not the host, on Cotolo's Hallelujah Trail ... hence, role-reversal week.

Highlights:
Olga: "Americans do everything to do nothing."
Mixed marriages: Sometimes the easiest thing to do is not so easy.
If Curt tried to move to Russia, within 72 hours, he would be dead. Not a dishwasher, not mopping floors. He'd be dead, and someone would have stolen his shoes.

Where does Curt get his ideas? Charlie Brown.
Why become a writer: It had the best praise-to-work ratio.

Live podcasts vs. edited podcasts. Frank's is free-form, Curt is a control freak ... each has it virtues (but some podcasts are more virtuous than others).

Why "Digital Slob"? Mixing the clean world of external expectations with the messy world of internal contentment.

Using tech to amplify who you are, rather than tech using you to absorb who you are.

Sorry for skipping a week ... making up for it by hijacking the "Cotolo Chronicles," veteran jack-of-all-media Frank Cotolo's live 2-hour weekly Internet radio show, which features me for the last 90 minutes.

I know, I know, but he gives everyone persmission to do this with the first words out of his mouth every week — so put your lawyers back in their holsters.

We talk about everything from the future of podcasting and live radio shows to Tom Selleck's sexuality and how much Hawaii marks up Macaroni and Cheese.

Meanwhile, my wife and I both celebrate our birthdays this week (she's 28, I'm 38) ... she's so pretty everyone thinks she married me for my money ... it really sucks when the one thing people think you've got going for you, you also DON'T HAVE!

Having a party tonight ... maybe we'll post some pictures if I can crop any of them into PG-13 dimensions.

Aloha,
Curt

podcasting for newbies "if the Internet is an insane asylum, then podcasting is art therapy."

About Me

My photo
In the midst of a successful, albeit difficult to Google, 12-year professional career as a newsroom manager for a slew of daily newspapers, Curt decided it was time to siphon back some of the creative spotlight, and "wow" readers with his deft improvisational typing. "Digital Slob" debuted in 2002.
